Great Cape Herbs News & Events
2008 Spring
We are currently working on this year's class schedule with a large focus on today's needs. "Think Global Act Local"
"COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE" (CSA) gardens to be started:
We are working to create a membership-supported community farm. For this the kick-off year, we are only going to ask for a $100 membership contribution, and are limiting it to TWELVE people who wish to make a commitment. In this way we can develop the gardens, monitor labor and materials input, and tally the harvest. This will then give us an idea of how many members we can support in 2009, and what the membership fee will be. Extra amounts of the harvests will be sold via Great Cape Herbs , or the Brewster "Night Market" (see below), and the gardeners who helped to grow the food will keep a third of the profit. Thus you will be growing and taking home your own food and earning a profit on the excess! And IF there is excess, then some of those who could not join THIS year can still have fresh, LOCALLY-grown organic food.
And of course the folks who work the gardens THIS year will have the first chance to buy a membership NEXT year.
We had a first meeting last Sunday afternoon, and 5 or 6 people have already signed -- So Contact Us Now!!
BREWSTER "NIGHT MARKET" at the farm this summer?
All over the world, but especially in Asia, the common, working folks like us have a Night Market bazaar where local farmers and crafts people can sell their produce and wares after the fancy, high-end tourist shops have closed.
THIS WILL BE A VERY FUN (and unique for Cape Cod !) EVENT AIMED AT BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE LOCAL ECONOMY, AND BUILDING THE BONDS OF A REAL "COMMUNITY". We will be having an organizational meeting and plan the "night market": times, dates, frequency, participants, fees, selling spaces, parking, etc. So if you are a gardener, crafter, artist, or service provider-- Simply use our contact form, call us at 508-896-5900, or send an email to ginkgo@greatcape.com to tell us how you would like to participate. If you have had experience in holding or promoting public events like this, your help and input will be appreciated.
BLUEBERRIES AND GRAPES have arrived !
The spring order arrived a few days ago and we are madly "potting-up" about 6 kinds of grape vines, and 5 varieties of blueberries. Most we will plant on the farm, but some we will sell. Come and get them while they last ! Limited quantities.
GOATS AND CHICKENS COMING SOON
If all goes as hoped for, we will soon have around 13 goats and a coop full of chickens here at the old farm! We are planning to sell eggs and goat's wool for spinning if all goes well. Stay tuned.
ALSO-- is anyone out there in Internet Land is interested in learning how to raise goats, sheep, and/or chickens ??? With enough people interested in learning the skills of sustainable living on Earth, we will organize classes. Give us a call: 508 896 5900, or email: ginkgo@greatcape.com (put "classes" in the subject line).
"FARMER BREWERY" and "FARMER WINERY" The State of Massachusetts alcoholic beverage commission (ABC) has a special license for farms (like us) who want to brew beer or make wine on the premises. We are exploring this possibility so that we can make the likes of Nettle Beer, Calendula wine, and herbal liquors, as well as more "normal" (what's THAT?!?!) grape-based wines (from grapes we grow) and hops-based beers (I have just ordered 40 hops rizomes to be planted on the farm). STAY TUNED!!
GINKGO TREES ARE READY TO GO
Many sizes and shapes; $10 to $500. Pick early to get the tree you really want (the one that speaks to you, and says "take me home..." ). Large, specimen trees must be dug in the next few weeks, so come and pick!
There are now many many Great Cape ginkgo trees planted across the Cape. Join our "Grande Society of Ginkgo Nuts" (!?!) and plant the world's oldest tree species-- the amazing, ancient, and honored, memory-enhancing Ginkgo biloba! Make a fine herbal tincture from the leaves of your own tree.
